What Is the SHL Test? 

SHL is a company that delivers 30 million assessments to over 150 countries annually. With more than 300 scientists, psychologists, and technologists on their test-making team, SHL is a leading test distributor that companies use to find employees.  

These challenging tests help filter the application pool to make it easier for employers to select the most skilled applicants. They are highly competitive, timed assessments where you will be required to outscore other applicants. 

While a company can have tests tailored to its specific needs, 3 of the most common assessment categories are utilized more than others. 

  1. Behavioral– Top job candidates demonstrate high interpersonal skills, work well independently or as a team, and seek to reach goals in a timely, professional manner.  
  1. Personality– Applicants must have the right personality traits for the job. This section is largely dependent on the personality of the company in which one is applying. 
  1. Ability– Candidates also need to have the necessary skillset for optimum performance. Problem-solving, decision-making, and reasoning skills are tested through various cognitive exams. 

SHL Scores 

Most SHL tests are multiple choice and count only correct answers in the total score. To determine your score, your test results are compared to the average score of test takers. You will receive a feedback score with a grade ranging from E-A, with E being the lowest percentile and A being the highest. Scoring in the 70th percentile or higher is considered above average, so you will want to strive for this score at a minimum. 

Common SHL Tests 

In the next section, you will become familiarized with some of the most common SHL tests you might encounter. Preparing for these tests ahead of time can largely increase your chances of passing. 

Verbal Reasoning Test 

Verbal reasoning tests measure how well you can understand written material and logically evaluate it. These tests are typically written passages followed by questions related to the passage. SHL verbal tests consist of 30 questions and last around 15-20 minutes.  

Numerical Reasoning Test 

Numerical tests require you to interpret and calculate statistical data. Questions are usually workplace-related and involve the kinds of reasoning needed for the role in which you are applying. SHL numerical tests are 18 questions and last around 15-25 minutes.  

Inductive Reasoning Test 

Inductive tests assess how well you can identify and interpret patterns to form inferences and predict outcomes. You must be able to understand variables within sequences to answer correctly. SHL inductive reasoning tests are around 20 questions long and last around 15-20 minutes. 

Deductive Reasoning Test 

Deductive tests assess your ability to form conclusions from limited information. You must be able to identify whether or not an argument is valid based on given statements. SHL deductive reasoning tests are also 20 questions long and 15-20 minutes. 

Personality Test 

SHL administers personality tests to see if you have desired characteristics for the position. Its most common test is the OPQ32, which is an occupational personality test. SHL OPQ32 tests are approximately 100 questions, and they measure 32 different characteristics to determine your personality. 

You may also be tested with a work behavior assessment that aims to determine how you might respond to work-related scenarios. 

Situational Judgement Test (SJTs) 

SJTs assess decision-making based on work-based situations. You will be faced with scenarios you might encounter for that job role. You will then be given multiple-choice answers in which you must choose the best options to pass. SHL SJTs generally have 12-25 situations and give ample time to answer. 

Mechanical Comprehension Test 

This test assesses your aptitude in troubleshooting, maintenance performance, and use of machinery. You must have a good understanding of levers, gears, pulleys, and other basic concepts of mechanics. SHL mechanical comprehension tests are 15 questions long and timed at 10 minutes. 

Calculation Test 

This test measures your basic numerical skills. You will be asked to problem-solve missing variables using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, equations, and the order of operations.  

Reading Comprehension Test 

This test evaluates your ability to understand written language through a series of textual passages. You must be able to make objective conclusions based on the text and answer questions accordingly.
