The Different Types of Wonderlic Tests
Though many places refer to their Wonderlic test as a general test, there isn’t one overall Wonderlic examination. Instead, Wonderlic has made various tests to help employers uncover the crème de la crème of job candidates. Below, we go over the types of Wonderlic tests you might encounter.

Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test (Wonderlic Personnel Test)
The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test, now known as the Wonderlic Personnel Test, is the most popular of their tests and is used by many industries to screen prospective employees. There are two versions of the Wonderlic Personnel Test that you might have to take:
Wonderlic Personnel Test Quicktest (WPT-Q)– This 8-minute test consists of 30 questions and is administered online without a proctor. Very few actually completed this test, with an average score of fewer than 15 points total.
Wonderlic Personnel Test Revised (WPT-R)– The WPT-R is the full version of the cognitive ability test, which lasts 12 minutes and contains 50 questions. Most test-takers score around 21 points due to the short time in which one has to answer all of the questions. This test is generally conducted online or in person and is proctored or supervised.
Both versions of the Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test have a similar format, with 4 different test question categories:
- Math (40% of the test) – algebraic word problems, averages, decimals, ratios, and rates
- Verbal Reasoning (40% of the test)- English skills, proverbial understanding, syntax structure, analogies, and finding the exception
- Logic (10% of the test) -spatial and deductive reasoning, 3D-shape identification, and pattern recognition
- General Knowledge/Clerical Questions (10% of the test)- data processing, finding errors and duplications, decimal number ordering, data plotting and graphs, and general vocabulary
Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST)
The WBST aims to measure your ability to succeed in the workplace. A popular test for jobs that require an office setting, the 2-part exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions in which you have 40 minutes to complete.
In the first section, you will encounter a 50-question test focusing on reading comprehension and grammar knowledge. The second section focuses on your math skills and ability to use numerical reasoning.
Wonderlic Scholastic level Exam (Wonderlic SLE Test)
The Wonderlic SLE is different from the other exams in that its main function is to help colleges screen prospective students. Universities and colleges alike use this standardized test to serve as an entrance exam. The multiple-choice test is 50 questions long, with a 12-minute time frame. Generally, the test is taken in-person with a proctored admin. It can either be conducted online or with classic pencil and paper.

In addition to the Wonderlic SLE, there is another format called the Wonderlic SLE Quicktest. Wonderlic WonScore
The Wonderlic WonScore is exactly as it sounds. Combining 3 relevant categories into one score, the WonScore measures your cognitive skills, personality, and motivation levels to determine if you would be the right candidate for the job. Let’s take a closer look at each of the categories:
Cognitive Ability
Your cognitive ability is the most important predictor of your performance capabilities and job success. This test portion measures your ability to learn and adapt to new situations, problem-solve, and understand instructions.
Personality
The personality section looks at whether or not your behavior is fit for the company and the job responsibilities. The Wonderlic Personality exam uses aspects of the Five-Factor Model, a scientifically-supported psychology exam, to evaluate the following characteristics:
- Dependability
- Stress tolerance
- Open-mindedness
- Cooperation
- Sociability
Motivation
This section evaluates how interested you are in the job. If your interests align with the kinds of skills you’d be performing, you are likely to score high marks on this section.
How is the Wonderlic Test Scored?
The scoring of your Wonderlic Test is fairly straightforward. For the 50-question examination, a low score is 10, a poor score is between 10-20, an average score is about 20, while an excellent score is 45. Each question is equally weighted, so aim to answer as many questions as possible to score the highest points on your Wonderlic test.
Though each question is weighted the same, different industries have their own cut-off scores for qualifying candidates. An average score for a chemist or electrical engineer, for instance, is around the 30-point mark, while the average score for receptionists and dispatchers is somewhere around the 22-point mark.
